FOUND OBJECTS ARTIST
Usha Seejarim is best known for her reinterpretation of ordinary and domestic objects. Making use of common materials such as safety pins, wooden pegs, irons and brooms, her work has a distinctly Dadaist influence. Her compositions result from repetitive acts of mark making alluding to themes related to time, chance, space and displacement.
Seejarim holds a Master’s Degree in Fine Art at the University of The Witwatersrand. Solo exhibitions and presentations include: Un balai pourquoi pas une balai, Scac Marestaing, France, Transgressing Power, Smac Gallery Jhb, Nestings at the Centre for Less Good Idea, Keepers of the Common at the Investec Cape Town Art Fair; Reasons for descending the staircase; Venus at Home – presented at numerous museums in South Africa.

MULTI DISCIPLINE ARTIST
Nkhensani Rihlampfu is a South African based multidiscipline artist born in the country’s northern province of Limpopo. Nkhensani studied fine arts at the Tshwane University of Technology in Pretoria, where he went on to obtain a B-Tech in Fine Arts.
Over the past few years, Nkhensani has been involved in several art programmes. He has produced many commissioned pieces including a unique sculpture created from shredded South African notes for the South African Reserve Bank and a painting for Constitutional Hill, which is the seat of South Africa’s apex Constitutional Court.
His art has been featured in a number of group and curated exhibitions in the Absa Gallery, Grahamstown Arts Festival, Pretoria Art Museum, RMB Turbine Art Fair and the FNB Joburg Art Fair, to name a few. In addition to Rihlampfu’s continuously growing reputation within the industry, his work has been acquired by many prominent private and corporate art collections.
Rihlampfu has worked at Workhorse Bronze Foundry, where they were involved in casting multiple artist’s sculptures including William Kentridge’s bronze pieces.
2019 was a memorable year for Nkhensani, he presented his first solo exhibition, where he transported the audience through a margin of breadth between the world we perceive and the truth that remains unseen. Furthermore, RMB Turbine Art Fair honoured Nkhensani with the Feature Artist exhibit at the 2019 fair. To follow came his win of the Absa LAtelier 2019-Pool A.
South African artist Jo Roets’ background is in the film industry where she worked in the art department. She also had a full-time lecturing career, lecturing in painting, prosthetics, special effects, props fabrication, sculpting, mould-making and casting at a multimedia film school. In 2017, after 14 years as a senior lecturer, Jo exchanged her lecturing cap for that of a full time artist.
As a recovering alcoholic, her courage to embrace sobriety and follow her creative drive are deeply intertwined. In the early days of her recovery program Jo met a diverse range people from all walks of life – all with the same condition. Her work is born from a profound recognition that although our circumstances differ, essentially we all share a common humanity. Her artworks are a deep celebration of this recognition.
Her abstract works conceived in ecru, ivory and earth tones, show the inspiration of patterns and shapes found in the visually and symbolically rich cultures of indigenous South Africans. They seamlessly incorporate elements from the visual symbols found in the wall paintings and beadwork of the Ndebele, Islamic prayer mats, the marital aprons of isiXhosa, Zulu earplugs and beer pots, the spiritual patterns of sacred geometry, sewing and crocheting techniques associated with her own Afrikaans culture and elements from her Portuguese ancestry

Lebogang Mogul Mabusela is a multidisciplinary artist and a self-proclaimed monotypebabe and zine queen based between Johannesburg and Pretoria. In 2019 she graduated with a BA in Fine Arts from the Wits School of Arts where she was also awarded the Standard Bank Fine Arts Prize.
She is a Design Indaba top 50 Emerging creatives class of 2020. Mabusela is not represented by a Gallery, she has participated in a number of group exhibitions, namely at Wits Art Museum, The Point of Order, The Project Space, The Melrose Gallery, Turbine Art Fair and Latitudes Art Fair to name a few. Mabusela prides herself in being the founder of Makoti Technologies™ (est 2017) a bridal gifts shop that works as a mobile outlet offering a dynamic range of designer gunz, tools and technologies that enhance women’s desires and roast patriarchy, while maintaining their attitudes.
MULTI DISCIPLINE ARTIST / ART CURATOR
Olwethu de Vos is a multidisciplinary artist and art curator based in Johannesburg.
Olwethu is affiliated with the city’s respected artist community, August House, and her practice encompasses explorations into two – and three dimensional artworks, adding glass sculptures and mixed media drawings to her output, amongst others. De Vos obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in Fine and Applied Arts from the Tshwane University of Technology in Pretoria, where she majored in Glass Blowing, Sculpture and Figure Studies. De Vos is the Co-Founder of The Blessing Ngobeni Art Prize and The For Sale Project Exhibition.
Confronted with the cityscape of sprawling JHB, De Vos’ work interrogates the vast intricacies of societal ideologies and theories surrounding post-humanism. Unraveling such intricate subjects opens up an expansive exploration into the ties that exist between the natural world, society and the influences of technology.
Overall, such contemplations invite speculation as to what it means to be human and, moreover, how human beings might come to realize their greatest potential.
This Artist is a dedicated contemporary African sculptor, installation artist as well as performance artist and fashion enthusiast, who currently lives and works in the small town Swellendam, Western Cape, South Africa.
Being a mother of two young girls she decided to raise her children as close to nature as possible where it was still possible for the children to go to school barefoot. She states that her children and nature are her muses in her artistic work. The closed eyed and barefoot child is currently one of Nel’s signature traits.
She sees herself as a warrior of life honoring the inner child, innocence, love and nature. Through her creative work she becomes a voice to the silenced.
The story she is telling is that of her own experiences of growing, failing, healing, seeing and learning, seeking questions and answers to conscious awareness and the essence of the true self and the relationship with the inner child.
Her sculptures are mostly in wood, cement, fabric and resin and she enjoys playing with color and texture, to create figurative doll like sculptures. It results in an assemblage of curious figures that narrates theories of Human condition. Nel’s work is monumental to the child self.
While the cultures may be very different they all share a strong sense of the geometric. Jo’s focus and challenge is finding the similarity in diversity and to takethese disparate threads and combine them in a unique way. She calls her artworks “light relief”. The way Jo has used this medium is unique.
In 2018, Jo’s work was selected for three other prominent art competitions: Sasol New Signatures, Pretoria Art Museum (finalist); Tollman Bouchard Finlayson Art Award Barrel Head Exhibition, Hermanus (finalist) and Vuleka, Art.B Gallery, Bellville (finalist).
She was announced as the winner of the inaugural StateoftheART Gallery Award in 2018 and had her first solo exhibition in May 2019 at StateoftheART Gallery.
Her work has been exhibited at numerous galleries, including SMAC, StateoftheART, Rust & Vrede, Art.B, GUS, Imibala, Nel, Art Afrique, Breytenbagh Gallery, No End Contemporary, Art@Africa, Johann van Heerden, Art on Avenues, Christo Coetzee Museum, AVA and Trent Gallery. Apart from participation at gallery exhibitions, her work has also been exhibited at festivals around South Africa.
These include, KKNK, Hermanus FynArts Festival, US Woordfees and Tulbagh Arts Festival.
She is currenty exhibiting at Galeria Begbie & Coll in Palma de Mallorca, Spain.
FINE ARTIST / PRINT MAKER
Lebohang Motaung was born in 1992 in Evaton but grew up in Sebokeng. She studied at the Vaal University of Technology (VUT) where she earned both her Diploma (2012) and B-Tech (2013) in fine art, majoring in printmaking. Following was a certificate of excellence in printmaking at Artist Proof Studios (2015) in Johannesburg where her art career took an accelerative turn through local and international opportunities that came her way.
She has participated in exhibitions such as Twenty: Art in times of Democracy at the Turchin Centre, Appalachian State University, North Carolina (2014-2015), SMFA Art Sale, Boston, USA (2015) and A Flagrant Arcade: Contemporary Art as part of Art Africa Fair in Cape Town, (2016). She has also shown at the Turbine from 2014 to 2016, and at the FNB Joburg Art Fair in 2016, the same year she was part of the Top 100 artists for the ABSA L’aterlier annual art competition. Black Hair Matters at Eyethu Art Space in Soweto (2018) is another exhibition to note.
A recipient of commissions, Motaung coordinated a Human Rights Mural in Johannesburg (2014), the Zazi Campaign Bill Board Designing that promoted an awareness and use of contraceptives by young girls (2014), a Visual Arts Network of South Africa (VANSA) Research project on Cosmo City (2015), and another Mural project for the Johannesburg Hollard building (2016). In 2015, Motaung took up a four-month residency at The School of Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, USA where she learned advanced intaglio techniques and contributed as an assistant teacher to The School’s programme. She is currently doing an 8 months residency at The Project Space in Johannesburg.
Collen Maswanganyi was born in 1977 from an artistic family in Noblehoek village near Giyani, Limpopo province. He is a third generation artist in his family. His father Johannes Maswanganyi was a well-known artist who has exhibited internationally and his works forms part of prominent Private and public Collections worldwide. His father followed in the footsteps of my grandfather Piet Mafemani Maswanganyi who was great carver.
After matric, Collen went to study fine art at Technikon Witwatersrand where he obtained a National Diploma. After his studies, he started practicing art full time.
He has participated in several prominent group and solo exhibition locally and internationally. His work is currently exhibited in the Beijing Biennale. His work also forms part of corporate, museums, universities, private and many other institutions collections.
He is an award winning artist, most notable awards are the Absa Merit award and Kanna Award and he has enjoyed a lot of exposure in his early career as an artist.
JEWELLERY DESIGNER / BUSINESS WOMAN
Angela Yeung is the acclaimed jewellery designer and businesses woman behind the bespoke jewellery brand, Impilo Collection. Born in Hong Kong, Yeung immigrated to South Africa as a young child.
Inspired by the fine jewellery she found in the East and Africa’s abundant precious metals & minerals, Yeung studied metal smith crafting before going on to graduate from the Gemological Institute of America with the title of “Diamond Grading Graduate” Accredited Jewellery Professional.
In 2005, Angela founded her own jewellery company, Impilo Collection, which specializes in the design and manufacture of both bespoke jewellery commissions for private clients and contemporary art jewellery collections. “Impilo” is an isiZulu word which means “life”.
She believes that every life story is uniquely personal and each visit to Impilo should be an equally unique experience. Impilo Collection Investment and Fine Jewellery has exhibited at several international jewellery fairs in London, Hong Kong, Japan, China and Miami. Angela’s contemporary range has featured in collaborations with many of SA’s designers including David Tlale, Ryan Keys and Rubicon.

James is a contemporary painter, printmaker and sculptor who works from a studio in Victoria Yards, near downtown Johannesburg. His work looks at the relationship between people and their environment, and he has become a campaigner for public green spaces, after restoring The Wilds, a 40 acre park in Johannesburg over a 6 year period.
He has won several awards, including a BASA (Business Arts South Africa) Award for the 100 steel sculptures installed in The Wilds, and from the South African Institute of Architecture for the same project. His work has been shown in over 20 solo and group exhibitions in Johannesburg, Cape Town, Philadelphia and New York. His work is in collections including Merrill Lynch Bank of America, the Constitutional Court of South Africa and the City of Johannesburg.

Simphiwe Buthelezi was born in 1996 in Benoni, South Africa, and currently lives and works in Johannesburg, South Africa. In 2016, Buthelezi participated in a peer mentoring programme hosted by Assemblage Studios, which launched her development as a young artist. In 2017, she was a participant of the Artist Career Boot Camp conducted by Art Source South Africa and hosted by the Bag Factory Artist’s Studios. Buthelezi is the recipient of the 2018 Blessing Ngobeni Art Prize, culminating in a residency at the Bag Factory Art Studios. In 2019, she presented her first solo exhibition, ‘Lala La’, curated by Chumisa Ndakisa at The Bag Factory Studios in Johannesburg, South Africa.
In 2020, Buthelezi presented her second solo exhibition, Imvuselelo Yenkululeko Freedom’s Domain, at the SMAC Gallery in Stellenbosch, South Africa, as well as two group exhibitions; Shaping Things: An exploration of clay and ceramics in contemporary South African art practice at SMAC Gallery in Stellenbosch, South Africa; and A Show of Solidarity at SMAC Gallery in Cape Town, South Africa. In 2019 she exhibited work at the
Young Congo Biennale in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), and participated in several group exhibitions, most notably The Female Line at SMAC Gallery in Cape Town, South Africa in 2019, Preview#3 in Milan, Italy, Self at Glen Carlou Gallery in Stellenbosch, South Africa, Art Market Budapest with Johannesburg Art Gallery in Budapest, Hungary, and FNB Art Joburg with Johannesburg Art Gallery at Sandton Convention Centre in Johannesburg, South Africa.
FINE ARTIST / TEACHER
Lerato Motau lives on Vilakazi Street in Soweto, the historical significance of which has inspired her and features in some of her work. Motau’s work has featured in quite a number of group exhibitions. Internationally, she was represented in exhibitions that showed in Beijing, China and Finland.
Despite a learning barrier of dyslexia, Motau has obtained a Fine Arts and Teaching Diploma from the Johannesburg Art Foundation in 1998. In 2004 she received an – NQ4 Certificate in Craft Enterprise from the Craft Council. In 2005, she qualified with an NQF4 Certificate in Basic Embroidery and also attended a handmade felt-making workshop in the same year.
She was recently commissioned to contribute a unique 17 metre textile work for The Leonardo Hotel in Sandton – now the tallest building in South Africa.
Motau is actively involved in two collectives. They are: Tourism Entrepreneur
Partnership, Hidden Treasures based in Johannesburg and the So we too, which is a collective of seven Soweto-based companies.
ARTIST / EDUCATOR / CURATOR
Gordon Froud has been actively involved in the South African and international art world as artist, educator, curator and gallerist for more than 30 years. He has shown on hundreds of solo and group shows.
Froud graduated with a BA (FA) Hons from the University of Witwatersrand, and a master’s degree from the University of Johannesburg, where he runs the Sculpture department as a senior lecturer.
He has curated numerous group exhibitions that have traveled the country. He regularly shows on more than 20 exhibitions a year including showing in Washington, Holland and Paris 5 years ago. He was selected as the first Site – Specific artist in Residence at Plettenberg Bay for 2012 and again for 2013 as a participating artist in the Site – Specific land art Biennale. Three sculptures were selected for an exhibition of South African Sculpture in the Hague in May 2012, one of which was acquired by the SA Embassy there. He showed at Nirox Sculpture Park and at Stellenbosch Botanical Gardens as part of the ‘Heavy Metal’ outdoor Sculpture exhibition in 2013 and 2014.
He is represented in many public and private collections. Froud curated 2 shows of SA contemporary Art to Appalachian State University, North Carolina and the Beijing Biennale 2015 which were also shown at Pretoria Art Museum and University of Johannesburg Art gallery. His two- year cycle of work, a solo show of more than 150 new works, has was showcased at the Standard Bank gallery from April to June 2018 as Harmonia: Sacred Geometry, pattern of existence. This how has traveled to various major galleries and museums in 2018 and 2019. Froud regularly shows on more than 25 shows a year. He is reading for a PhD at the University of Johannesburg.

Cow Mash was born in Limpopo (birth name Kgaogelo Mashilo) and raised in Pretoria where she is currently based.
In 2016 during her third year in University, Cow created her first life size public figure, representing freedom fighter Francis Baard, which forms part of the National Heritage Monument. Cow graduated in 2017 from Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) with a B-tech in Fine Arts (cum laude), majoring in sculpture. In 2017,
Cow was one of three artists to create a 2.5meter sculpture of Political leader Oliver Tambo, which stands in Johannesburg’s O.R Tambo international airport. Cow was winner of the PPC Imaginarium fashion category in 2019 and in the same year a finalist in the sculpture category.
In 2019 she also collaborated on a life size sculpture of Zakithi Nkosi for the Zakithi Nkosi Clinical Haematology Centre of Excellence, located at the Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital. SAFFCA, (Southern African Foundation For Contemporary Art) named Cow their SAFFCA artist of the month in May 2020. She is currently completing her master’s degree at TUT and while lecturing in sculpture and fibre arts.
