Through her storytelling she has created real significant changes in the lives of others. Her TedX Women talk focused on how we each possess the keys to unlock doors of opportunity for others, allowing them to release the gifts and talents with which we are all born. I have crowned her with flowers indigenous to the Transkei, the region in which her hometown of Gungululu lies.
A rose, the state flower of New York, is tucked into the crown to represent the part of her life spent there. The key that sits on her earring is a reminder that we hold the keys to open doors for others. That we can be the keys of change. The drawings on her person are taken from her two most recently published books, Chasing the Tail of my Fathers Cattle and The Village Sleep. These celebrate the body of work with which she has gifted us. I feel so grateful that Sindiwe has granted me permission to crown her.
